Query Letter Critique

Are you querying agents hoping to secure representation or submitting your manuscript to publishers for consideration? Distilling your work in less than 500 words can be challenging on the best of days. Unfortunately, the query letter is the “first impression” of the publishing world. Your query demonstrates your grasp of your manuscript, your pitching savvy, and your technical writing chops. However, it’s a genre that is poorly understood, hard to pin down, and can take months if not years of trial and error.

If you are just getting started in the query trenches or have been there for a while and are wondering what’s missing, I can help. I’ve written five successful query letters for both novels and short fiction manuscripts and have received over a dozen partial or full manuscript requests across two novels. I have also been agented (and no longer am by choice) and have helped authors successfully pitch their ideas to major publications like Tordotcom. Furthermore, I have taught critical reading and writing at the university level for a decade.

Please email me for sample critiques, questions, or custom requests.

Standard Critique – $100

  • I will leave detailed, in-depth feedback using tracked changes and in-line comments on a .docx file. I will also provide you with an overview of my major overarching feedback to help orient you and give you a more holistic picture of your query letter. You are welcome to ask clarifying questions, but I will not evaluate new drafts following my critique.

The “Dante’s Inferno” Critique – $200

  • In addition to the services provided in the Standard Critique, I will evaluate and provide supplementary feedback on a maximum of two additional drafts of your query letter (three drafts in total). This option is great if you are looking for a bit more coaching in your query-writing journey.

Back Cover Copywriting

Are you struggling to summarize your book in a catchy, succinct way that will grab a prospective reader’s attention, help them understand what to expect, but keep the story’s mysteries, well, mysterious? I work as a back cover copywriter for two different publishers and have written and edited over a dozen back cover blurbs for authors. This is a collaborative process, and I will be eager to learn about your book before writing the perfect blurb! For a quick sample of my back cover copywriting, scroll to check out my books, for which I wrote and edited the blurbs. Please email me for samples from other authors, questions, or custom requests.

Standard Back Cover Copywriting – $85

  • For authors who don’t yet have a back cover or just have a messy draft. I will use your notes to write a killer back cover blurb that will hook your readers. I work in all genres in both fiction and non-fiction and will provide up to two substantive edits to the blurb to ensure it is to your liking.

Existing Back Cover Revamp – $50

  • If you already have a back cover blurb written but aren’t happy with it, this option is ideal. Rather than writing the blurb from scratch, I will use your existing draft as a base for a substantive rewrite. Some parts of the original blurb may remain, especially if requested. I will provide one major edit to the revamped blurb to ensure it is to your liking.

The Hollow Gods (The Chaos Cycle #1)

Black Hollow is a town with a dark secret.

For centuries, residents have foretold the return of the Dreamwalker—an ominous figure from local folklore said to lure young women into the woods and possess them. Yet the boundary between fact and fable is blurred by a troubling statistic: occasionally, women do go missing. And after they return, they almost always end up dead.

When Kai wakes up next to the lifeless body of a recently missing girl, his memory blank, he struggles to clear his already threadbare conscience.

Miya, a floundering university student, experiences signs that she may be the Dreamwalker’s next victim. Can she trust Kai as their paths collide, or does he herald her demise?

And after losing a young patient, crestfallen oncologist, Mason, embarks on a quest to debunk the town’s superstitions, only to find his sanity tested.

A maelstrom of ancient grudges, forgotten traumas, and deadly secrets loom in the foggy forests of Black Hollow. Can three unlikely heroes put aside their fears and unite to confront a centuries-old evil? Will they uncover the truth behind the fable, or will the cycle repeat?

The Echoed Realm (The Chaos Cycle #2)

Miya’s world ended in Black Hollow.

It’s been three years since the Dreamwalker upended her life and left her with a heavy burden. A fledgling to the ethereal realm, Miya stumbles into the nightmares of those haunted by spectres. Little does she know, one of them is coming for her, clutching a dark secret abreast.

Kai has found a new purpose with his companion, but the price is his freedom. Bound and beholden to Miya, he struggles to adjust to his new role as her vanguard.

Meanwhile, Mason discovers he may be a pawn trapped in a web of schemes. Was his time in Black Hollow an accident, or was it only the beginning of some greater machination?

As Black Hollow’s bloody stain spreads beyond its wooded borders, Miya fights to evade a past she barely understands. The Dreamwalker’s legacy is a vise grip, and it isn’t letting go. Primordial horrors draw near, fables come alive, and long-buried histories rise from the grave, ready to hunt.

Sharpen your claws and bloody your teeth. There’s fear to be sown.
